William Shakespeare
HAMLET Jesús Herrera Flamenco Ballet
"Hamlet" – one of Shakespeare's most famous plays – is transformed for the first time into an intense and passionate flamenco performance, touching upon themes of family, revenge, power, and murder. It is not just flamenco dancing – the performance also features local choirs, creating an all-encompassing whirlwind of intrigue, secrets, and tragedy. Flamenco has never before been used to convey this literary masterpiece, so audiences can expect a completely new and original performance that enhances their emotional experience.
Tragedy, drama, and existential loneliness – to be or not to be, to act or not to act, to dance or not to dance…
To renounce or to seek revenge. The combination of the language of flamenco, classical music – inspired by the works of Modest Mussorgsky – the authentic presence of the Orfeón Donostiarra choir, and contemporary, unfeigned dramaturgy will create a kind of oxymoron, where seemingly opposing elements merge into a unified meaning.
The choreographic language of the dance, flamenco performance, and theatricality merge with musical expression. The depth and beauty of Shakespeare's text will come alive through the voices of the Orfeón Donostiarra choir and deep, expressive flamenco singing.
Moving away from a chronological interpretation of the work, this artistic concept is based on the revelation of feelings and emotions, states of the soul, and the existential abysses that mark the tormented life of Prince Hamlet.
