About this event

Legendary ambient music creator William Basinski to perform in Vilnius this September

One of the most prominent creators of contemporary ambient and experimental music, William Basinski, is embarking on an exclusive tour of European churches this autumn. On Friday, September 25th, at 8:00 PM, the artist will perform in Vilnius for the first time at St. Catherine's Church.

The composer, who has been creating in New York and California for over three decades, is famous for his hypnotic soundscapes that blend analog tape loops, reflections on the passage of time, echoes of memory, and a melancholic atmosphere. With a classical musical education, the artist uses obsolete technologies and magnetic tapes in his work, thus creating a unique sound that explores the sense of transience.

William Basinski gained his widest international recognition with the monumental four-part album The Disintegration Loops, which has become a classic of contemporary ambient music. The music publication Pitchfork included this work among the 50 best albums of 2004, and the deluxe reissue released in 2012 was awarded the highest score and recognized as the best reissue of the year.

Throughout his career, the artist has collaborated with numerous visual artists and theater directors. His music was featured in director Robert Wilson's opera "The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic," for which Anohni served as musical director. The piece was presented at the Manchester International Festival and subsequently toured Europe and North America.

Orchestral interpretations of The Disintegration Loops have been performed in spaces such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and at festivals in Europe, Australia, and the USA.

Currently, William Basinski is presenting his latest work, On Time Out of Time – a hypnotic and meditative sonic journey that is particularly well-suited for sacred spaces. The upcoming concert at St. Catherine's Church promises to be one of the most exceptional musical events of the autumn in Vilnius.
