The Lost Shtetl: The Šeduva Express

Emerging from the mist like a mirage, the "Lost Shtetl" is one of the most anticipated museums in Lithuania in recent years. Along with it, the word "shtetl" itself is likely to be revived in our language. In Yiddish, it means a small town – that is what Jews called their places of residence. However, these were the same towns where Lithuanians also lived. One of more than 200 shtetls was Šeduva.

What once was is sensitively and aesthetically revealed by the "Lost Shtetl" museum. More than a hundred people, from Šeduva to Hollywood, worked on this exceptional creation, which stands out for both its architecture and creative solutions. Their main goal, as well as ours as your guides, is for the story of at least one person from Šeduva to find a place in your memory.

During this full-day excursion Vilnius–Šeduva–Vilnius, we will get to know not only the "Lost Shtetl" museum but also Šeduva itself – its buildings, streets, and signs that bear witness to cut-short lives. During the tour, we will draw lines between the past and the present, between the living and the dead, between ourselves and others.

We will also visit the old Jewish cemetery of Šeduva – one of the few remaining witnesses testifying to a once-thriving community. The Memorial Park, a living memorial created by Italian landscape architects to honor the memory of the Jews of Šeduva, will also leave an impression.

During the trip, we will have lunch according to a Jewish menu. From morning until evening, we will be accompanied by stories, memories, sounds, and tastes that help not only to understand but also to feel.

Experiential excursion program:

8:00 departure from the Vilnius "Akropolis" parking lot. The bus will wait behind rows 1-9 (we will send information with the bus license plate number before the excursion). The bus departs on time, so it is very important not to be late.

Excursion at the "Lost Shtetl" museum, Memorial Park, and the Jewish cemetery of Šeduva.
