In October, we once again invite you to meet at the Sutartinės evenings at the Vilnius Ethnic Culture Centre (Ankštoji St. 3-1)!
This polyphonic singing tradition, which has gained interest worldwide and become a symbol of Lithuanian ethnic identity, stands out from other traditional music genres due to its performance style, dissonant harmonies, and unusual onomatopoeic words. Sutartinės are often viewed not only as a continuation of an archaic tradition but also as a technique for spiritual development, as their performance requires focus, listening to one another, and consensus, leading to an uninterrupted flow of music.
Sutartinės evenings are intended for those who want to practically get acquainted with the methods of singing sutartinės, feel their unique beauty, and experience musical harmony. Both those who already have experience and those who just want to get to know the polyphonic singing tradition are welcome to the sessions.
The Sutartinės evenings are led by Rima Visackienė – an ethnomusicologist, member of the sutartinės singing group "Trys keturiose", ethnoculture teacher, and researcher at the LLTI Folklore Archive, who, among a multitude of closely related professional activities, also engages in teaching the singing of sutartinės. Hailing from the land of sutartinės, northeastern Aukštaitija, and possessing many years of experience in singing and passing on ethnocultural knowledge, the lecturer gladly shares it with others, aiming to convey the principles of traditional singing and reveal the subtleties of intonation and other aspects of performing sutartinės.
