On July 30, in the garden of the Carmelite Monastery at the Gates of Dawn, world-renowned percussionist Vladimiras Tarasovas will perform a unique piece titled "Walking Through the Sounds of Vilnius," created for the 700th anniversary of Vilnius.
The nearly hour-long solo performance is a sonic journey through the city's history, its streets, and the traces left by different nations, religions, and cultures. V. Tarasovas perceives the sound of Vilnius as a polyphonic ensemble created over seven centuries, in which the memory of every city community remains alive.
Walking through the old streets of Vilnius, past churches of different denominations, the courtyard of the former Great Synagogue, and the house of the Vilna Gaon, numerous layers of the city's history are revealed. Some have survived in architecture, others in barely visible fragments, yet their resonance is still palpable.
To convey this history, V. Tarasovas uses percussion – instruments that have accompanied humanity since ancient times, long before melodic instruments appeared. According to the creator, percussion allows for reaching what cannot be precisely written in notes: a deeper memory, a sense of time, and the echo of history remaining in the city.
Vladimiras Tarasovas is one of the most important figures in Lithuanian and European free jazz, a member of the legendary Vyacheslav Ganelin, V. Tarasov, and Vladimir Chekasin trio. His work encompasses solo music, jazz, contemporary art, theater, and cinema. The artist has performed with prominent European and US improvisational music creators, led the Lithuanian Art Orchestra, composed music for plays and films, and organized visual art exhibitions.
The "Summer Moods" festival concerts take place in a chamber space in the Vilnius Old Town, where music merges with the evening light, the silence of the garden, and the living backdrop of the city. The old monastery garden opens to only one hundred listeners, which is why every concert here gains a special sense of intimacy.
This is a slow summer experience in the city: before the concert, listeners are invited to an aperitif in the garden, and later the evening continues with music under the open sky. The aperitif is not included in the concert ticket price, the number of places is limited, so those wishing to participate are invited to register by phone: +370 621 77016.
