SONICO – TANGO revolution

When music is ahead of its time, it sometimes takes decades for the world to hear it. And sometimes, it takes musicians from five countries determined to rediscover it.

On November 10th, a special concert will take place at the Vilnius Town Hall. SONICO, one of the most original and prominent contemporary tango ensembles in Europe, bringing together musicians from Argentina, Belgium, France, Spain, and Chile, is coming to the Lithuanian capital. Their creative courage, impeccable mastery, and distinctive musical style have earned them international acclaim.

Founded in Brussels in 2015 by Argentine double bassist Ariel Eberstein, the ensemble ventures where tango tradition meets unexplored musical possibilities. There are no accidental notes or predictable solutions in SONICO's music – here, every phrase has its own character, every instrument tells its own story, and ingenious arrangements become a true triumph of creative imagination. Complex rhythmic patterns, unexpected harmonies, subtle instrumental dialogues, and sudden contrasts in mood create a compelling, vibrant, and constantly changing musical world. This is tango that echoes the counterpoint of Bach, the rhythmic boldness of Stravinsky, the freedom of jazz, and the enduring passion of Argentine music.

"There was a time when Rovira was more revolutionary than me," said Astor Piazzolla. These words open one of the most intriguing stories of 20th-century tango.

Eduardo Rovira (1925–1980) was a brilliant Argentine composer, bandoneon player, and tango visionary whose music was far ahead of its time. For long decades, his work remained in the shadow of his famous contemporary, Piazzolla, until SONICO decided to bring it back to the world's concert stages. By meticulously reconstructing scores that were forgotten or considered lost, the musicians not only revived an undeservedly overlooked musical legacy but also revealed its stunningly modern sound. The album "ROVIRA 100," recorded in Buenos Aires in 2025 to mark the composer's centenary, became another significant milestone in this extraordinary musical journey.

SONICO's musical journey spans prestigious world stages – from the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires to BOZAR in Brussels and the Philharmonie Luxembourg. However, the recognition from international music critics is no less telling than the geography of their concerts.

"Rolling Stone" included the ensemble among the seven most prominent contemporary tango groups, "Billboard" recognized their debut album as one of the ten best tango recordings of the year, and the prestigious British music magazine "Gramophone" called the discovery of Rovira's music a true revelation for fans of Astor Piazzolla. The Argentine newspaper "Clarín" presented SONICO's creative mission as the return of the avant-garde, reviving an undeservedly forgotten tango genius.

For the Vilnius audience, SONICO will present an exclusive concert program that will reveal the ensemble's diverse repertoire, with a special place reserved for the work of Eduardo Rovira. Here, virtuosity is inseparable from sensitivity, intellectual musical thought from emotional power, and precisely controlled sound from unbridled creative freedom.

This is an evening when music will not just play – it will surprise, provoke, move, and keep you guessing what awaits behind the next musical phrase. When a familiar tango rhythm suddenly turns in an unexpected direction, and tradition transforms into bold, sophisticated, and engaging contemporary art.

On November 10th at the Vilnius Town Hall – SONICO. Music where tango history is being rewritten.
