The group's leader and bassist Michael League emphasizes that from the very beginning, the most important thing for the collective was the sound and content of the music. Snarky Puppy's work weaves together elements of funk, R&B, rock, classic soul, modern gospel, fusion, and jazz. However, the group itself avoids being pigeonholed into a single genre – this is not a traditional jazz ensemble. As Nate Chinen of The New York Times aptly noted, listeners should "take them as they are, rather than judge them by what they are not."

Over a career spanning more than two decades, Snarky Puppy has constantly evolved and expanded its musical field. "Our sound has changed dramatically over the years," says M. League. "In the beginning, we were more jazzy, focused on complex musical structures. After moving to the Dallas scene, we became more emotional and deeper. We aimed to communicate clearly with the listener, but without simplifying the music."
In January 2025, the group once again joined forces with the Netherlands-based Metropole Orkest, known for its ability to combine jazz, classical, and popular music on a symphonic scale. The project was recorded live over three evenings in Utrecht (January 17–19, 2025), a decade after their first collaboration – the orchestral suite Sylva, released in 2015, which won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Their latest joint work is the album Somni, released in November 2025 by the record label GroundUP Music. According to M. League, it is the group's most ambitious project to date: "This is undoubtedly our most ambitious work – and at the same time, one of the most smoothly executed recordings. Every team – from camera operators to producers – worked with tremendous dedication and love." According to him, the warmest audience reaction in their entire 22-year history only confirmed that the group's music continues to reach listeners' hearts.
Every Snarky Puppy album marks a new creative direction. "Our rule is that new music cannot sound like it did before. It has to feel like it's moving forward," says M. League.
