Thread by thread. Color by color. A small square – and the whole world.
Until October 16, the VAA gallery ARTIFEX will host Regina Sipavičiūtė's solo exhibition "FOR YOU" ("TAU"). This exhibition is a continuation of the "Classic Inspirations" initiative, which was born in the gallery a few years ago.
This time, we have the honor of presenting an artist, textile designer, educator, and long-time lecturer at the Vilnius Academy of Arts Department of Textile Art and Design, who has been active in the Lithuanian art field for more than half a century and has inspired more than one generation of textile artists – Regina Sipavičiūtė.
In the artist's work, textile becomes a sensitive space where Lithuanian tradition, color, light, rhythm, and the precise process of manual labor meet. Her work is associated with moderation, restraint, and rational composition. Her pieces are characterized by harmony, serenity, balance, and tectonics. The external simplicity hides the invisible side of the jewelry-like work put into it.
In this exhibition, the artist presents the viewer with a tapestry of subtle colors, appliqués created using her own technique, and textile miniatures.
An important part of Regina Sipavičiūtė's creative identity is folk art. For the artist, it has become not only a source of inspiration but also a way to speak about memory, materiality, and the disappearing signs of everyday life.
This exhibition is about textiles that can be seen. And about textiles that are worth looking at closely. An exhibition where one needs to examine every thread, notice its direction, the transformation of color, and the barely perceptible change in texture. About a tradition that does not stop in the past. About a craft that becomes art. And about small works that contain great experience.
"I lay thread by thread, the colors change, I can transition from one to another, I can choose patterns and color combinations. The shades of the piece become visible when you take it and tilt it – as the light changes, shades appear. Each drawing is completely different, it is impossible to repeat, because a thread, when placed next to another, already takes on a different shade."
