This tour is part of a guide training course: some of the participants will be trainee guides. Because of this, there will be more storytelling and more detail than we usually provide on our tours.
Stories about this hilly area have survived since ancient pagan times, and since the beginning of the 19th century, many luminaries who served Lithuania have been buried here. Without their work and dedication, we would likely live differently today, perhaps even elsewhere, and it is doubtful we would be speaking Lithuanian. During the tour, we will not only remember the people buried there, their work, and their fates, but we will also talk about the history of the cemetery itself, and look for exceptional tombstones, monuments, and chapels. You will learn why cemeteries outside city limits began to be established across Europe only at the end of the 18th century, why townspeople resisted being buried in them, and what tricks the authorities had to use to convince them to bury their loved ones in the new location.
Tour start: we meet at the entrance to Rasų Cemetery on Rasų St. Duration: ~ 2 hours.
Please do not be late and have a copy of your ticket saved on your phone. Once the tour has started, the guides will not be answering their phones, so the possibility of joining late will be limited.
For children under 10 (traveling with adults participating in the tour) - the tour is free. We kindly ask you to assess the children's ability to participate in the tour.
What if it rains? The tour will take place, just don't forget your umbrellas ☔ and appropriate clothing 😊
