Stories about this hilly area have survived since ancient pagan times, and since the beginning of the 19th century, many prominent figures who served Lithuania have been buried here; without their work and dedication, we would likely live differently today, perhaps even elsewhere, and it is doubtful we would be able to communicate in Lithuanian. During the tour, we will not only remember the people buried there, their work, and their fates, but we will also talk about the history of the cemetery itself and look for unique tombstones, monuments, and chapels. You will learn why cemeteries outside city limits began to be established across Europe only at the end of the 18th century, why townspeople resisted being buried in them, and what tricks the authorities had to use to convince them to bury their loved ones in the new location.
Tour start: we meet at the entrance to Rasų Cemetery on Rasų St. Duration: ~ 2 hours.
