Milk, Blood and Honey

About this event

On September 30, Contour Art Gallery will celebrate its tenth anniversary.

The gallery will mark the jubilee by opening the exhibition "Milk, Blood and Honey". The exhibition serves as an opportunity to review not only the gallery's past decade but also the process through which today's gallery grew from ideas, meetings, and consistent work.

It is precisely this living process that the anniversary exhibition "Milk, Blood and Honey", curated by France-based art critic Julija Dailidėnaitė Palmeirao, speaks about. The exhibition title draws on archetypal metaphors of life, beginnings, sacrifice, and maturity that have long been established in culture.

Milk here marks the beginning – care, dependence, promise, and potential. It is the first stage where ideas are born, an artist's voice is formed, connections are made, and trust emerges.

Blood speaks of life, passion, and dedication. Of the intensity of creation, effort, risk, vulnerability, and the time that any true process requires. In the gallery's history, blood becomes a metaphor for what was invested in every exhibition, decision, and collaboration – everything that eventually became part of a shared cultural memory.

And Honey marks maturity. It does not appear on its own; it requires numerous flights, collected pollen, and the collective work of the hive. Likewise, the gallery's decade is the result of the efforts of many people. Over ten years, not only has a collection of individual initiatives formed, but also a cultural environment in which experience, memory, and lasting value accumulate.

"Milk, Blood and Honey" is not a retrospective exhibition and does not seek to chronologically retell the gallery's history. Rather, it offers a look at the gallery as a living organism whose existence is sustained by a constant circulation of creativity, relationships, and experience. The exhibition brings together authors of different generations, disciplines, and artistic practices. Painting, photography, and sculpture are not connected by a unified aesthetic or one specific theme. They are linked by what curator Julija Palmeirao calls the metabolism of creation – a constant transformation of materials, ideas, experiences, and meanings.

"It was important for me to see the decade not as a line from the beginning to the present, but as a metabolic process. The gallery constantly receives, processes, and transmits ideas, experiences, and relationships. Therefore, in the exhibition, different works act as individual testimonies of growth and simultaneously become fragments of one larger narrative about the art field," states exhibition curator Julija Palmeirao.
