About this event

24th (Saturday) Main day of the OPEN BOOKS festival + literary breakfast From 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM at the National Gallery of Art, Konstitucijos pr. 22

It has become a tradition that the main day of the "Open books" festival opens with a literary breakfast. This time, the festival organizers invite you to the breakfast table to remember that a person needs not only to nourish the body with food but also to address spiritual needs. Thus, in conversations over morning coffee and warm pastries, insights and recipes on how to live more consciously and meaningfully, how to hear and accept the opinions of others, and how to be resilient to disinformation will be shared by the well-known psychotherapist Prof. Eugenijus Laurinaitis, who recently published the book "Dukart du", and mindfulness instructor and psychological resilience expert Rosita Kanapeckaitė, who published the book "Realybės vadovėlis" this year.

On Saturday, October 24, the main events of the "Open books" festival will take place.

On that day, the most interesting books published by Lithuanian writers over the past year will be presented, and meetings with their authors will be held: the festival will be visited by Rimantas Kmita, Akvilė Cicėnaitė, Mantas Adomėnas, Lina Simutytė, Algis Bitautas, Daina Kleponė, Giedrė Kazlauskaitė, Gina Viliūnė, Antanas Terleckas, Jaunius Petraitis, Ilona Skujaitė, Ignas and Miglė Dilys, Daina Kleponė, Vidas Morkūnas, Tomas Šaltmeris, Arnas Ališauskas, Aldona Tüür, Kostas Strielkūnas, and others.

Traditionally, relevant discussions related to literature and culture will also take place – there will be talk about how we read history in a new way, what divides society the most, and there will be a discussion about whether a large chasm has really emerged between Vilnius and the rest of Lithuania, and what influence social networks have – do they connect or divide? Book lovers have probably also noticed that Lithuanian authors are writing more and more crime novels: so the festival will discuss whether we have really learned to solve the case of the Lithuanian detective story?

On Saturday, the festival will also host the famous Polish writer Joanna Bator, whose book "Kartu, kartu" was recently published in Lithuanian and has already received great attention from readers. J. Bator is a writer, publicist, and academic, awarded the prestigious "Nike" prize; her texts provoke discussions in Poland, and she is a prominent voice on feminist topics. The conversation will be moderated by writer Akvilina Cicėnaitė.

This year's festival will also focus on what writers who have fled Belarus due to the authoritarian regime are facing. "Open books" will host a discussion "Yesterday - neighbors, and today?", in which Belarusian writer and poet Juhasia Kaliada, currently living in Vilnius, and writer, translator, and literary scholar Hanna Jankuta, currently living in Austria, will participate.

During this conversation, a collection of essays by 18 Belarusian authors, "Einu pas jus, žmonės", will be presented. The participants of the event will talk about how a former neighboring country becomes a home, what one has to face when trying to adapt when you are forced out of your country, and you are not necessarily always welcome in your new home. The conversation will touch upon the reality of modern times, when one has to rethink the concepts of freedom, rethink one's relationship with the homeland, and what can be achieved through creativity.

The meeting with the writers will take place on the main day of the festival, October 24, at the National Gallery of Art. The conversation will be moderated by Vilnius-based writer and political scientist Uladzislau Harbacki.

On that day, the Open Books prize for non-fiction authors will also be awarded.

Event partners will treat visitors to Huracan coffee and Pergalės sweets; it will also be possible to purchase new books and works by participating writers, and get their autographs. This is one of the most important meeting days for the literary community of the year.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 24, at the National Gallery of Art. Ticket price: 20 euros.
