Director Oskaras Koršunovas: “Tartuffe is a ‘hero’ of our times. A perfect conformist, a careerist, a pragmatist, and a libertine. To achieve his goals, this character stops at nothing. Of course, in the new production, he will not pretend to be a saint; he is more of an excellent public relations specialist who understands well that there is no better tool for fooling the gullible than morality, which he cynically manipulates. Hypocrisy and lies are merely image-building for him, and enriching himself at the expense of others is proof of his strength and superiority. Tartuffes always profess the ‘religion’ of the day. In Molière’s time, they were hiding in the Church; in the Soviet era, in the Party; and now they are where Mammon is: in banks, in politics, etc. They are always ideologically correct and manage to dress the worst deeds in the garb of the most beautiful words. The global financial crisis is a consequence of Tartuffism. This comedy is especially relevant today in Lithuania, where Tartuffism is simply flourishing.
In the new production, I do not intend to stick only to classicist canons: there will be both textual and action-based provocations. Molière himself dictates interesting conditions for the staging. This author is sharp, relevant. No play in the world has ever caused such a huge scandal as ‘Tartuffe’. It is the first dramatic work to become an international event: pitting one of the greatest states against the most influential power, a mega-state – the Papal Palace. In Lithuania, I see Tartuffism not in the Church, but among modern officials, in modern politics, in modern business, where there is a lot of talk in beautiful phrases, but behind it all lies corruption. How easily and cynically people are manipulated using propaganda and public relations tools... This will be recognizable in the play. Unfortunately, the coming generation is no more honest. It is simply better prepared for this manipulation, which was revealed particularly well in the current liberal scandal. The liberals spoke directly about coming to break corruption, but they offered us the biggest pie of corruption, which we are now slicing.”
