The museum is currently hosting the exhibition "Migrating Artists". This exposition is a retrospective journey through nine decades of the 20th century, following the footsteps of Lithuanian artists far beyond the borders of their homeland. The exhibition covers the period from studies in Parisian academies in the 1910s to the peaks of modernism and the maturity of exile at the end of the century. It is a story about the artist as a nomad, carrying their home in canvas, clay, or graphic sheets, navigating between state borders and political upheavals.
The exhibition presents works by Lithuanian exile artists who chose transatlantic and continental migration routes, rarely exhibited together – painting, graphics, sculpture, and other sources that complement this multifaceted narrative. Although the reasons why the exhibition's protagonists had to leave their homeland are complex, migration fostered the dissemination of ideas. As artists wandered, knowledge, experiences, the influence of authorities, and artistic ambitions traveled with them – they exchanged styles and forms, encouraged creators to adapt to local art trends, or became an impetus to seek authentic artistic expression.
