What do you imagine when you hear "Lukiškės"? Probably a former prison or a square that constantly sparks discussions or even disputes over its monuments and activities. But in reality, Lukiškės is one of the oldest historical suburbs of Vilnius, starting near the Cathedral and stretching all the way to present-day Lazdynai or even Karoliniškės!
During the tour, we will get to know a part of this vast territory, but it holds countless stories. We will talk about the Tatars and the mosque, the terrible stench caused by the tanners who worked in the area, the old Vilnius factories, breweries, and even a port! You will find out why Spanish and Portuguese were spoken there in the 1950s. We will also show you the houses where a Nobel Prize laureate, a lion, and a songwriter lived. We will also recall America, which the people of Vilnius rushed to taste in Lukiškės in the early years of independence. Modern art pieces, a synagogue, and houses decorated with nature motifs also await: Lukiškės is truly more than just a square and a prison.
