Director Laura Kutkaitė, having created the plays "The Silence of Sirens" and "The Breasts of Tiresias" at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, presents a new play, "Teach Me". Creating a provocative piece about school, Kutkaitė states that the theatre is a grateful place to rethink one's approach to education. In this work, as in her previous ones, she combines a philosophical gaze with humor, utilizes social criticism, dramaturgy created on the devised principle*, and tragicomic images born during improvisations with the actors.
Before starting rehearsals with the actors, Kutkaitė visited various Lithuanian gymnasiums and spent the day in classes with 9th-11th grade students. The creators also draw inspiration from thoughts and stories sent by teachers and students. They say that everyone will be able to recognize their own school experiences – both the painful ones and the most idiotic ones.
"Teach Me" asks: what kind of society is the current school shaping? How are a school and a factory similar? Can we consider ourselves factory products? Where should the line be drawn between education and indoctrination? Do we, as a society, want to establish a culture of obedience and subordination, or do we dare to imagine a future where education truly liberates?
"Teach Me" invites the audience to spend an unusual "day at school" together.
The play is dedicated to the memory of Gabrielė Skiriūtė
*dramaturgy created on the devised principle – a collaborative approach where the script is not written in advance, but is collectively created during rehearsals
