The exhibition "Gatherings" brings together, for the first time in one space, works created by artist and composer Lina Lapelytė across various periods. The title of the exhibition also serves as a reference to the importance of community in the artist's work. How would our relationship with one another change if we listened carefully to those around us and our environment, and looked at daily rituals, rules, and coincidences poetically? In her work, Lina Lapelytė explores the relationship between voice, music, performance, and listening, while experimenting with various spatial situations.
Frequent themes in Lapelytė's work include interpersonal connections, aging, vulnerability, and loss; personal and political dimensions intertwine in her pieces. The artist is close to composer Pauline Oliveros's idea of active, or deep, listening, which assigns the listener responsibility for what, how, and why they are listening. Both Oliveros's and Lapelytė's work and ideas unfold widely within the fields of feminism and ecology. Both shift focus away from performance virtuosity toward the voice primarily as an instrument of communication.
In the exhibition, the artist answers the question "with whom": most of her works were created in direct collaboration with other creators or by incorporating texts by various writers, poets, and artists into her pieces. Each time the works are presented publicly, the question "when" also becomes important. The re-presentation in 2026 of works created solely between 2011 and 2015 prompts us to ask whether we are living in the future we once imagined.
