Kjetil Mulelid – piano Rune Nergaard – double bass Andreas Winther – drums
(modern jazz, nordic jazz)
“One of the best contemporary jazz piano trios in Europe”, “the elite of contemporary piano trios”, “simply beautiful and beautifully simple” – this is how the international music press describes the Norwegian Kjetil Mulelid Trio.
Since their debut in 2017, the trio has become one of the most prominent groups in the young Norwegian jazz scene. Their concerts have ranged from sold-out jazz festivals in Vancouver and Ottawa to renowned clubs such as Unterfahrt in Munich, PizzaExpress in London, HCP in Lisbon, or B-flat in Tokyo.
At the heart of the trio's music is the work of pianist and composer Kjetil Mulelid. It brings together what Scandinavian jazz is so loved for: space, tranquility, and the beauty of melody. However, beneath this transparent surface lies much more – complex rhythms, rich harmony, energy, and the constantly changing improvisation of the three musicians.
Together with double bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Andreas Winther, Mulelid creates music where every sound has its place, yet nothing is entirely predictable. Composition here naturally transitions into improvisation, and three individual voices merge into one living musical organism.
It is a classic piano, double bass, and drums lineup, but with a very modern approach to how such a trio can sound today.
