"This theatrical fairy tale, which I found in the Neapolitan collection 'Il cunto degli cunti', rewritten in the form of an ancient tragedy, incorporating my merry, talented masks, which I wanted to preserve for the sake of people suffering from melancholy, worked a great miracle. The audience cried and laughed at my will, and came in crowds to see the performances of this fairy tale, as if it were not a fiction, but the absolute truth." (Carlo Gozzi)
