Paulius Tamolė: "Pommerat's 'Little Red Riding Hood' is about a little girl, about her loneliness. Do we, as parents, ever stop to think how often our children are alone, lacking the attention of their loved ones? How does loneliness affect a child? What is the relationship between children and parents in general? What do we call children's independence? This fairy tale speaks about the meeting of three generations. Here, a daughter, a mother, and a grandmother interact. Our fears, complexes, or strangers – the character 'embodied' by the wolf. All of this is hidden in this authentic work, the plot of which comes from the original 'Little Red Riding Hood'. The play is very clean: reading it, you realize that it is written exactly as much as is needed. On the other hand, that laconic and concrete language gives great freedom to the imagination.
I am raising a five-year-old daughter, Elzė, she is my Little Red Riding Hood. Ideas and thoughts come from observing her and interacting with her. The stories of little girls remain the same as in the times of the Brothers Grimm, only the context has changed. We will try to talk about it with the audience through the performance.
I imagine theater for the family. After all, children usually come to children's plays with their parents. I really want them all to enjoy the time spent together at the theater. In the age of information, it is important that the lightning-fast time stops for a moment in the theater. It is important that even after the performance, a place and time are found to continue communication with the child, to share thoughts about what they saw, what they felt, how they understood it, and what they learned."
Joël Pommerat was born in 1963 in Rouen. Having acted in a local theater troupe since the age of 18, he began writing texts for the theater in 1986. The playwright's plays are staged in various countries around the world. Since 2010, J. Pommerat has worked at the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, as well as at the National Theatre of Belgium. In 2014, Philippe Quesne and Nathalie Vimeux invited J. Pommerat to the Nanterre-Amandiers theater artists' association.
J. Pommerat has received more than 15 national and international awards. In 2015, for his dramaturgical work, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Théâtre by the Académie française, and in 2016, he received the Europe Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities.
