"Roulette" is created by the director and choreographer Jo Strømgren, who is already well-known in Lithuania. His 2018 production "The Door" at the LNDT won four Golden Stage Cross awards and remains a favorite among audiences to this day. With that play, the director proved that reflection requires distance – having analyzed the traits and flaws of the Lithuanian national character there, this time Jo Strømgren sets out to explore the dreams and desires we suppress in ourselves in an effort to be safe and like everyone else. The scenes, spinning like a roulette wheel, are presented by the director and actors as a situational comedy where each character tries to escape from repression, hoping to experience at least a temporary feeling of happiness. This premiere invites both young audiences and older ones, knowing that routine and the desire to break free from it are relevant to all age groups.
The play aims to raise the question of what can drive us to consume intoxicants, commit violence, experience gender confusion, and seek religious answers. The play is also about freedom of choice and responsibility, about the role of reality and the illusory world, and ultimately, it will raise very universal reflections about the era in which we live.
The action of "Roulette" takes place in a small, insignificant office; one tiny mistake spins the characters into a carousel of the most unexpected events. No one knows what the next spin will bring.
"In life, we take calculated risks. The cautious ones might experience boredom or a certain monotony, while the brave ones disregard all boundaries. Fortunately, we can each choose. But what happens when someone else takes risks for you? With this stage work, together with the creative team, we will aim to create a wide field of associations and interpretations, allowing us to look at the play's narrative from various perspectives – our Nordic daily life issues, the current geopolitical situation, or simply the ordinary life of one person, regardless of time or place," says Jo Strømgren.
