ILGĖS - an evening of songs and sutartinės to commemorate ancestors

About this event

Just like every year. Where the forests of the oldest Vilnius rustle, we invite you to commemorate the time of ILGĖS by singing together. ILGĖS songs are a unique phenomenon in our culture. Also known as orphan songs, they carry an ancient tradition of honoring departed loved ones, remembering ancestors, and singing out and weeping away longing, as if cleansing the soul of a heavy burden. For many years, we have been meeting annually at the ILGĖS song table led by "Promočių giesmės". To accompany with thoughts, to touch with sound, to remember, to bear witness to close and distant ancestors. The event is emotionally deep. If you have experienced recent losses or are sensitive, you may step away from singing whenever you need to. The event does not require you to sing. No singing experience is necessary. The songs will be accompanied by musical improvisations from violinist Tadas Dešukas. If you do not wish to sing, you can simply come to be together and listen. Song has always been, in all nations, equal to prayer. "The soul does not see light, the soul hears sound" (Malukas). Event leaders: Laurita Peleniūtė - voice. Tadas Dešukas - violin. The event is free for seniors, Ukrainians, people with disabilities, and children. We ask that you maintain silence during the event. Dūmų fabrikas has unique acoustics, and not only do songs resonate there, but noise is also heard very clearly. As organizers, we reserve the right to kindly ask those who disturb the peace to leave. Event location: Dūmų fabrikas Event starts at 7 PM, doors open at 6:30 PM. The event will be photographed and filmed; considering the theme of the event, the camera will not be close to the audience.
