For the first time in the history of Lithuanian museology, the exhibition presents the masterpiece 'Ecstasy of Saint Mary Magdalene' by the Baroque genius Caravaggio (born Michelangelo Merisi, 1571–1610). It is not known for certain whether any of this artist's works were ever part of historical Lithuanian art collections, but the works of his followers, distinguished by their play of light and heightened realism, were and remain an undoubted adornment of Lithuanian manors, churches, museums, and private collections. In the permanent exhibitions of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, one can also discover more than one work by a follower of Caravaggio, testifying to the effectiveness and vitality of the tradition started by the artist. Even the artist's opponents could not resist the uniqueness of his work. Thus, the exhibition of Caravaggio's painting 'Ecstasy of Saint Mary Magdalene' at the Palace of the Grand Dukes acquires a particularly rich context, allowing one to see the influence of the brilliant creator on the development of European art and to become acquainted with the work of the so-called Caravaggisti.
In the tour with the exhibition curator, you will learn not only about the artist's work. A story awaits you about the artist's equally impressive personality and the drama of his life.
