This autumn, an exceptional event awaits Lithuanian music lovers – one of the most interesting music projects of today, the duo Grandbrothers, who have conquered the world's major concert halls, are coming to Vilnius. Performing at the National Philharmonic on October 17, the collective became famous for their unique sound, in which the sound of a classical piano merges with the latest technologies and live-created electronic textures. Critics have repeatedly called these artists "sound architects," and their concerts are described as a hypnotic combination of music, technology, and performance. Known for their unique creative direction in the contemporary music scene, Grandbrothers' performances are often referred to as a kind of "open-heart surgery for the piano."
Over a career spanning more than a decade, Grandbrothers have become one of the most prominent names in the contemporary classical and electronic music scene. The duo's work blends minimalist compositions, ambient and electronic music sounds, and the emotionality characteristic of film scores. In the artists' music, one can discern the minimalist traditions of John Cage, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, as well as a creative kinship with Nils Frahm, Hauschka, and Ludovico Einaudi.
Grandbrothers have earned international recognition not only for their distinctive sound but also for their exceptional live performances in the world's most famous concert halls – Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, London's Barbican Centre, Paris's Philharmonie de Paris, Vienna's Konzerthaus, Berlin's Funkhaus, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Cologne Philharmonic, and Tokyo's Blue Note. The collective has also appeared at major festivals such as Sónar, Montreux Jazz Festival, Mutek, Reeperbahn Festival, Trans Musicales, and Lowlands, and the duo's world tours have covered Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.
A special ARTE Concert broadcast of Grandbrothers' performance at Cologne Cathedral also received particular attention, revealing the duo's ability to create an extremely intimate atmosphere in monumental spaces. The duo also collaborates with visual artists, prepares audiovisual projects, composes music for film and dance performances, and performs in popular clubs in European capitals. The audience particularly appreciates the duo for their immersive live performances, where the concert becomes not just a musical event, but a technological performance. Viewers can watch the piano being "played" in various ways and see up close how the musicians create a highly multi-layered sound with a single instrument.
The duo has released five albums that have earned international acclaim and millions of streams on digital platforms. Their latest album, Elsewhere, opens up more clearly for the first time to the influences of analog synthesizers, drum machines, and club culture, giving the music more dynamics and energy. The album received excellent reviews for its bold stylistic turn while maintaining the core identity of Grandbrothers' work – the emotional and enchanting sound of the piano. With this album, the duo recently finished a tour of Europe: on a 32-concert tour, the collective performed in such prestigious venues as Élysée Montmartre in Paris, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Huxleys Neue Welt in Berlin, Scala in London, Vicar Street in Dublin, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, and others. Critics called this tour one of the most impressive – in the duo's concerts, minimalist pieces organically merged with intense electronic energy and enchanting sound design.
Grandbrothers are pianist and composer Erol Sarp and sound engineer and software developer Lukas Vogel. Formed in Düsseldorf in 2011, the duo gained international recognition by turning the acoustic piano into a multi-layered instrument capable of creating soundscapes characteristic of electronic music. The artists achieved all this not by using digital samples or virtual synthesizers, but by physically transforming the sound of the instrument itself through a specially developed electromechanical system. In Vilnius, Grandbrothers will present their latest performance, where listeners can expect multi-layered harmonies, hypnotic rhythms, and an impressive lighting and visual stage atmosphere. This is a great opportunity to hear and see one of the most interesting and surprising music duos of the present day live.
