About this event

Electronic music and audiovisual art celebrity Alva Noto will perform in Vilnius with his latest project

One of the most prominent creators of contemporary electronic music and media art, Alva Noto, returns to Vilnius. On October 23, at the LVSO Concert Hall, the world-renowned German artist, together with Japanese video artist Ken Niibori, will perform his latest audiovisual show, "HYBR:ID UNI PARA".

Alva Noto, whose real name is Carsten Nicolai, is considered one of the most important figures in the international electronic music, contemporary art, and interdisciplinary media scene. His work, characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, has been hypnotizing both audiences and critics for decades. The portal "Insounder" described the artist's performances as an "unforgettable, all-encompassing sensory experience" and laconically added: "Simply magic." The publication "The AU Review" wrote that the artist "took minimalism to new heights," while "Pitchfork" emphasized that in his work, "harsh timbres and abstract electronics eventually become deeply moving."

Throughout his career, Alva Noto has released several dozen solo albums, created numerous collaborative projects, and performed with world-famous artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Michael Nyman, Blixa Bargeld, Ryoji Ikeda, Iggy Pop, and Mika Vainio. He performs all over the world: in Europe, Asia, South America, and the USA. Alva Noto has performed at the world's most important cultural institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as at famous festivals such as CTM in Berlin, Sónar in Barcelona, and Mutek in Tokyo.

To the general public, the name Alva Noto is particularly well-known for his collaboration with the legendary Japanese composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto. In addition to impressive joint performances, they created the music for Alejandro González Iñárritu's film "The Revenant" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which won numerous top honors at the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, and others.

The Berlin-based artist belongs to a generation of creators who consistently operate at the intersection of music, visual art, and science. He is interested in scientific phenomena, mathematical models, codes, structures of randomness, and principles of self-organization. The artist seeks to transcend the usual limits of sensory perception, turning sound and light frequencies into something experienced simultaneously by both the eyes and the ears.

"One of my main sources of inspiration is nature. When encountering nature, science becomes incredibly interesting because it reveals phenomena and offers models that help to understand it," says Alva Noto. Before starting his artistic career, C. Nicolai studied architecture and landscape design, later becoming interested in the theoretical properties of sound and space. After moving to Berlin in the early 1990s, he founded the experimental music label "Noton. Archiv Für Ton Und Nichtton," which became a platform for his conceptual and experimental musical explorations.

C. Nicolai is also well-known in the visual art world. His works have been exhibited in prestigious international exhibitions, including documenta X, and the 49th and 50th Venice Biennales. For his work, he has won numerous significant international awards, including the Prix Ars Electronica, the Giga-Hertz Award (together with Ryoji Ikeda), the Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize, the Zurich Art Prize, and others.

In Vilnius, Alva Noto will present his latest audiovisual project, "HYBR:ID UNI PARA," created together with video artist Ken Niibori, which grew out of the "HYbr:ID" album series. Based on the precise sound design of this project, the live performance will create an experience that combines dystopian atmospheres, cinematic soundscapes, pulsing rhythms, and introspective melancholy.
