On Monday, June 1st, at 6:00 PM, we invite you to the opening of Deva Bartninkaitė's exhibition "Vaizdajuostė" (Videotape) at the Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Center.
What could the synergy between VHS (Video Home System) and textile weaving technologies look like? Weaving is one of the oldest human-created technologies, functionally used to this very day. Meanwhile, in the long history of technological evolution, VHS flew past us like a comet – having just shone, captivated, and sparked imagination, it soon disappeared from active use and remained a sentimental memory for most. The word "vaizdajuostė" was chosen for the title of Deva Bartninkaitė's master's degree creative project not by accident, and it aims to become a key that unlocks the door to the synergy of these technologies.
Deva Bartninkaitė's creative practice is consistently developed using weaving loom technology with VHS magnetic tape. The information contained on the tapes remains inaccessible, yet it is transformed into a different artistic medium.
The exhibition is a presentation of an artistic project carried out during master's studies at the Department of Textile Art and Design of the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
Artistic project supervisors: Assoc. Prof. Laura Pavilonytė-Ežerskienė and Assoc. Prof. Danutė Jonkaitytė
Research paper supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jurijus Dobriakovas
The exhibition is part of the VAA graduation works exhibition. The exhibition will be open until June 27th.
