Cannonball adderley tribute
On November 6, the Downtown Piano Lab stage will host an energetic evening filled with the spirit of blues and infectious swing, dedicated to one of the most prominent alto saxophonists in jazz history – Julian "Cannonball" Adderley.
At the center of the concert is saxophonist Marco Bernardi, arriving from Italy. He has dedicated a large part of his creative journey to studying the music, improvisational language, and unique sound of Cannonball Adderley. In this evening's program, Bernardi, together with Lithuanian jazz musicians, will revive the vigor, warmth, and spontaneous stage energy characteristic of Adderley's music.
Marco Bernardi began playing the saxophone at the age of eleven. In his native city of Bari, he earned a master's degree in classical music, later receiving a full "Siena Jazz" scholarship to continue his jazz studies in the Netherlands at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and earned a second master's degree at the Amsterdam Conservatory. The saxophonist has performed in Philadelphia, at the famous "Bimhuis" club in Amsterdam, and has played with the "Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra" as well as jazz masters such as Greg Osby, John Taylor, Miguel Zenón, and Marco Tamburini.
Cannonball Adderley is one of the most important figures in hard bop and soul jazz, famous for his rich, vibrant alto saxophone sound. He played in the Miles Davis sextet and participated in the recording of the legendary albums "Milestones" and "Kind of Blue," and his own repertoire gave birth to jazz classics such as "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," "Work Song," "Jive Samba," and "Sack o’ Woe."
On stage:
