In the shadow of the Baroque churches and palaces of Antakalnis hides a much younger layer of this district's past, so when we meet in Antakalnis this time, we will be looking for traces of the 20th century. This century was colorful, so there will be a whole variety of stories! During the Tsarist years, members of secret organizations gathered here, a psychiatric hospital was established during the Polish interwar period, and long-time residents rushed to buy up the monks' lands. In the Soviet era, artists—writers, poets, painters, sculptors, and musicians—began to move to Antakalnis. They walked along streets named after the seasons and pagan Lithuanian goddesses, climbed Varna Hill to draw inspiration, and the past of Antakalnis settled into their works, preserving that special aura. So, the stories of this walk will not be that old; in fact, you might even hear about people you know who lived in Antakalnis.
