(modern jazz, Nordic jazz)
Formed in Riga in 2025 by the renowned Canadian double bassist Andrew Downing, this international quartet brings together creative musicians from two continents to explore the connection between sound and place.
Inspired by their shared experience of living in the North, the group's music reflects the contrasts of the landscape – from freezing cold to scorching heat, from the majesty and mystery of the forest to vast expanses and the freedom to search. The quartet's sound captures the bold spirit of the works of Dave Douglas, Ornette Coleman, and Carla Bley, while simultaneously forging a distinctive musical language of its own.
The quartet's combination of instruments – double bass, trumpet, saxophone, and drums – creates a rich, multi-layered palette of sounds where breath, metal, wood, and resonance meet. Through interpretation, improvisation, interaction, and driven by inexhaustible musical curiosity, the performers create music that has a solid foundation yet opens up broad horizons, where composition and spontaneity are equal.
