Aglaja Ray exhibition "Less Noise – More Light"

"Less Noise – More Light" presents an interdisciplinary artistic research project by Aglaja Ray (Eglė Tamulytė) that spanned over sixteen months, focusing on the relationship between the environment and the human, as well as the act of focusing attention on observing a location.

In 2025, the artist moved to Kazlų Rūda – not for a short residency, but for a long-term stay. Consequently, the research did not begin with a pre-formulated idea, but with the observation and analysis of daily life in a specific place: working at the municipality, interacting with local people, the forest, the military training ground, and the slow rhythm of the town.

Today, Kazlų Rūda is one of the Lithuanian municipalities where a militarized environment and the associated imagery have become a common part of everyday life. Surrounded by forests, the sounds of nature intertwine with gunshots, military equipment, and training exercises.

And yet, this exhibition is not about war. It explores how a person adapts to their environment over time, how their attention shifts, and how a place shapes not only personal experience but also relationships with other people.

The exhibition presents paintings and assemblages that combine personal stories, the experiences of the local community, and found objects. Some of the items used in the exhibition were lent or donated by the residents of Kazlų Rūda and became an integral part of the artistic research. In this way, the community becomes not just an object of observation, but an active participant in the research itself.

The title "Less Noise – More Light" invites us to perceive silence not merely as the absence of sound. This exhibition tells us about attention – the ability to notice what often remains invisible in the noise of everyday life. The forest, the militarized landscape, and interpersonal relationships become different layers of the same experience here.

The exhibition invites the viewer to stop looking for unambiguous answers and to slow down their gaze. Art here acts as a research method – a way to get to know a place, a person, and the connection between them.

Aglaja Ray (Eglė Tamulytė) is an interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, installation, assemblage, and writing. She is a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Association, a recipient of five individual grants from the Lithuanian Council for Culture, and a winner of the Ary Stillman Prize. The artist's work has been presented in over seventy exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, and her pieces are held in private collections in Europe, the United States, and Mexico.
