A Person from Taiwan: a meeting with writer Ju Peijun

We invite you to a meeting with Taiwanese writer Ju Peijun, which will take place on October 8 at 6 p.m. at the Kaunas Vincas Kudirka Public Library, Laisvės al. 57. Is Taiwan very different from Lithuania? Certainly, but we also have quite a few similarities, especially in the struggles for freedom and democracy. These themes are explored in the work of Taiwanese writer Ju Peijun, whose book series "A Person from Taiwan" was recently published in Lithuanian. They tell the life story of Cai Kunlin, winding through different stages of Taiwan's development: from being a simple boy who loves books to becoming a victim of political repression, a prisoner, and later an educator and human rights defender. The main theme of the book is freedom: the freedom to read, speak, think, and not be punished for one's beliefs. At the same time, it is a story about resilience and the ability to not lose one's humanity even when injustice is happening all around. Many Lithuanians should easily recognize these themes from the history of Lithuania's occupation and liberation, so we invite you to rethink them together and compare them with what the Taiwanese have experienced. The book presentation will feature the author from Taiwan, Ju Peijun, who will be interviewed by Linas Didvalis, an associate professor at the VMU Centre for Asian Studies, with interpretation by Ieva Driukienė. The event is organized by the VMU Centre for Asian Studies and the Kaunas Vincas Kudirka Public Library, and it is part of the "Spotlight Taiwan" project. The event will be photographed.
