On the evening of December 18th, when the lights of the approaching holidays already envelop the cities and the spirit of anticipation, coziness, and high spirits begins to float in the air, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra invites you to immerse yourself in a special musical journey through the majesty of Viennese waltzes.

This is an evening where the splendor of 19th-century Vienna, magnificent ballrooms, sparkling chandeliers, and the endless swirl of the waltz will come to life. The most popular waltzes by Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II will be performed – music that has become an inseparable part of Viennese elegance, celebration, and the joy of life.

Today, it is difficult to imagine the great cultural history of Vienna without the waltz. However, its beginnings were much more modest – born from folk dances in the 18th century, the waltz was initially even considered too bold a dance. Nevertheless, it did not take long for it to conquer the ballrooms of Vienna and become a true passion of the city. It was Johann Strauss I who helped the waltz establish itself in the aristocratic and urban culture of Vienna, and his son, Johann Strauss II, elevated this genre to new artistic heights – transforming dance music into sparkling, melodic concert miniatures that fascinate with their orchestral color.

Yet, behind this extraordinary musical dynasty lies a dramatic story of father and son. Johann Strauss I, already the most famous creator of dance music in Vienna, did not want his son to choose the path of a musician at all. Supported by his mother, young Johann studied music in secret, and in 1844, defying his father's will, he formed his own orchestra and debuted in Vienna. Thus began one of the most impressive rivalries in music history – Strauss versus Strauss, father versus son, two orchestras and two huge personalities fighting for the sympathies of the Viennese public.

Time has shown that this competition became not only a family drama but also an incredibly fruitful creative engine. After his father's death, Johann Strauss II took over his orchestra and eventually became the world-renowned Waltz King, whose music still symbolizes the majesty, elegance, and unfading joy of life of Vienna.

The Viennese waltz has a special power – as soon as you hear its first bars, it seems that the world begins to spin differently. The three-quarter time, the lightly rising melody, the playful rhythm, and the brilliant sound of the orchestra create a true celebration where luxury, romance, and joy merge. It is no coincidence that Strauss's music remains inseparable from the solemn end-of-year celebrations and the Vienna that welcomes the New Year.
