Guide RIMUTĖ'S tour of the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica of St. Apostles Peter and Paul
Built and rebuilt, decorated and redecorated, counting six hundred years, the largest church in this region surprises with the legacy of painters, sculptors, and masters of art and construction inside. The Kaunas Cathedral Basilica of St. Apostles Peter and Paul is open to the parishioner, the traveler, or even the Pope himself.
One part strangely built, another too much embellished, a third like a unicorn - that is what Bishop M. Valančius himself said, having moved to Kaunas from his native Samogitia.
The sanctuary, enveloping one in spirituality, is full of riddles that we will try to solve:
we will look for a "secret" entrance!
we will compare paintings, of which there are even two hanging here!
we will discover the legacy of the Augustinian monks!
we will count how many Popes have visited Kaunas!
we will touch the kneeler of Bishop Valančius himself!
we will discuss the entirety of the sanctuary's art, architecture, and spirituality!
we will solve the mystery of the theft of the century!
we will look at the inscriptions on the gifts!
we will remember the most important clergy and benefactors!
we will consider why the painting of the Lithuanian ruler was placed on the altar!
we will guess why even a woman's memory is immortalized on the church wall!
we will understand the symbols and signs encoded in the iconography!
And we will reveal even more secrets and untold stories.
Tour price per participant: 15 EUR / 1 participant 12 EUR / 1 participant (for seniors, students, disabled persons)
The ticket price includes a donation/support for the preservation of the church's heritage.
For the convenience of participants, we will use an audio guide system (for all participants). This means that what the guide says, participants will hear personally through an earpiece, which will allow them to feel freer during the tour, adjust the volume, and step away for a better look or photography.
