About this event

Director: Kristina Kazlauskaitė

2026 11 04, 18:30 Kaunas Culture Centre GIRSTUTIS branch 2026 11 06, 18:30 Leipalingis Leisure Hall

In principle, everyone has principles. In principle, principles are important. At all times. They were, are, and, probably, will be. Sometimes those principles turn into absurdly comic situations and provoke dramatic conflicts. Especially when they are limited, dull, meaningless, and out of place or time. And where human relationships begin, well, you understand yourself... a suitable space for an amplitude of emotions appears – from love to hatred, jealousy and nobility, sincerity and posturing, essence and pettiness. And, lo and behold, comedy turns into tragedy...

"But in principle, everything will end well, brightly, and with hope," says actress Kristina Kazlauskaitė about her latest work. "Principle" is her directorial attempt to creatively transfer and combine two one-act humoresques by Russian classic Anton Chekhov, "The Bear" and "The Proposal," onto the big stage. "Maybe I'm sticking my nose where I shouldn't. I'm afraid, I'm trembling, but I'm sticking it in," K. Kazlauskaitė worries while preparing for the premiere.

A. Chekhov's early work has not been staged very often in Lithuanian theaters, but it remains relevant, ironic, and recognizes human vices, empty ambitions, and the clash of foolish principles with reality. "Do you think life has changed? And our principles? Everything is the same! Systems and technologies change, but a person loves and hates, laughs and cries in exactly the same way. Theater allows us to look at this more sharply, more ironically, and highlights some human character traits to the point of absurdity," shares K. Kazlauskaitė.

Prepare to spend 130 minutes of your life, in principle, with a smile.

The main characters are created by professional and well-known Lithuanian theater actors:

Andrius Kaniava, Gediminas Storpirštis, Redita Dominaitytė.

Action: in principle, in autumn and spring

Duration: in principle, two parts of 55 minutes each. An intermission without any principles is not included, but is inevitable (so the actors can change clothes).

Be principled – buy a ticket and prove to yourself that healthy humor has never hurt anyone!
