DESCRIPTION:
At the St. George the Martyr Franciscan sanctuary
A tour by guide RIMUTĖ and a meeting with a Franciscan friar.
At the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, on the edge of the city, the Bernardine brothers settled on gifted lands. They were often criticized for the unprecedented size of the red brick St. George the Martyr Church, which they oversaw the construction of themselves: it was said that nobles lived in wooden manors, and such a palace contradicted poverty, one of the vows taken by the brothers. To this, the monks replied that the wealth for construction came from generous donations from benefactors and bequests left in wills, "from a wooden house with a granary and two gardens to sixteen sides of bacon."
St. George the Martyr Church has remained Gothic, despite all the reconstructions that took place after wars and especially fires. The remnants of the interior furnishings that have survived to this day are a very valuable example of sacred art.
All this and more during the tour of the Order of Friars Minor Franciscan sanctuary.
The ticket price includes a donation/support for the preservation of the monastery's heritage.
