This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edmundas Alfonsas Frykas (1876–c. 1944), a renowned interwar Lithuanian engineer and architect born in Kaunas, and the designer of the Kaunas State Philharmonic building. This autumn, we are once again opening our doors for a special tour dedicated to this occasion.
During the tour, you will not only get acquainted with the most monumental masterpiece of this prominent Lithuanian modernist architect—the Philharmonic building—but also learn more about other E. A. Frykas projects in Kaunas and their significance to the city's architectural landscape.
The architect's own personality is equally intriguing; it will be revealed during the tour not only through E. A. Frykas' creative legacy but also through his life story, which ended like that of many interwar Lithuanian intellectuals, when talented people were swept away to foreign lands by historical events.
Today, the name of E. A. Frykas is inseparable from Kaunas Modernism, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and his contribution to Lithuanian architecture is indisputable, both due to the state-significant objects he designed and his exceptional creative style and majestic buildings that have stood for a century, connecting the present with the past.
