"The Maestro" in Lithuania for the first time: A Christmas show where even the classics tell jokes

Guido Dieteren, a fourth-generation conductor, his wife, opera soloist Wendy Kokkelkoren, and "The European Pop Orchestra," which is rapidly gaining popularity in Western Europe, will present "Christmas Show: When the Classics Joke!" on December 22nd at the Kaunas "Žalgiris" Arena – an evening of music, emotion, theatricality, and musical humor.

He grew up in a family where the conductor's baton is passed down almost like a family heirloom. Guido Dieteren's great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all conductors, and Guido himself became a conductor, violin soloist, arranger, and composer. His projects have performed in Europe, China, and North America, and according to official biography data, more than 2.8 million people have seen their live performances.

On December 22nd, the musician, known worldwide by his stage name "The Maestro," will arrive in Lithuania for the first time together with "The European Pop Orchestra" and his wife, opera soloist Wendy Kokkelkoren. The Kaunas "Žalgiris" Arena will host the project's only Christmas concert in Lithuania – "Christmas Show: When the Classics Joke!".

Organizers emphasize that this will not be a traditional classical music evening. In this large-scale arena show, popular and classical music will meet romance, energy, theatricality, a Christmas atmosphere, and one of the project's most distinct features – musical humor.

A conductor for whom a serious face is not a professional duty

"The European Pop Orchestra" combines the sound of a classical orchestra with the energy of a pop band. This allows for free movement between genres – from classical and film music to world-famous pop hits. Therefore, their concerts resemble dynamic musical shows more than academic orchestral performances.

Humor in this project is not an accidental addition. Guido plays the violin himself, interacts with the audience, playfully engages with the orchestra, provokes the musicians, and combines professional precision with theatrical lightness. Just when it seems a serious symphonic climax is beginning, "The Maestro" can instantly turn it into a witty stage episode.

Fourth generation of conductors – but he makes his own rules

Guido Dieteren was born in 1974 in the Limburg region of the Netherlands. Music in his family was not a hobby, but a tradition: his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were conductors. In his youth, Guido established himself as a concertmaster and soloist for various orchestras, and later chose the path of a conductor, violinist, and leader of his own orchestra.

While studying at the Maastricht Conservatory, Guido, together with his childhood friend, pop keyboardist Falco Borsboom, began looking for a way to combine the power of a classical orchestra with the rhythm and immediacy of pop music. Thus, "Guido’s Orchestra" was born, which later became "The Maestro & The European Pop Orchestra."

Throughout his career, Guido has worked as a music director, arranger, or creative partner with Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Simply Red, DJ Afrojack, André Rieu, Alessandro Safina, and other artists. The US public broadcaster PBS featured him and the orchestra in the show "Love & Peace Concert," describing the project as a unique synthesis of popular and classical music.

A love story that began with a single voice

For more than two decades, "The Maestro" has shared the stage with his wife, soprano soloist Wendy Kokkelkoren. Their story began in 2001, when Guido was offered a meeting with a young opera soloist. He was captivated by Wendy's voice, and she soon became a permanent vocal soloist for the orchestra. Professional chemistry quickly turned into a personal one: a few months later they became a couple, and in 2006 they were married at the Pancratius Church in Heerlen.

Wendy is a classically trained opera soloist. She graduated from the Maastricht Conservatory with "cum laude" in solo singing, and while still a student, she performed in "Opera Zuid" productions, including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Verdi's "Rigoletto," and Monteverdi's "Orfeo." Later, she performed in the USA and Canada, and has also sung in the presence of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

On stage, Guido and Wendy create a duo of contrasting energies: he is an expressive conductor and violinist who can turn a solemn orchestral episode into a joke with a single gesture; she is a soprano soloist who brings classical vocal technique to pop music arrangements. Off-stage, they are raising two daughters – Emma-Sophie and Annabel – and call themselves a musical family.

From "goosebumps" to a party

The performers themselves describe their formula as "pop meets classic." Well-known melodies take on new orchestral arrangements, and the program is complemented by Guido Dieteren's own compositions. The goal is to create a full amplitude of emotions: romance, feeling, passion, and energy.

This is exactly what sets this show apart: one moment the orchestra sounds monumental, a few minutes later it transitions into a pop rhythm, and in another scene, the audience is already laughing at the dialogue between "The Maestro" and the musicians. This is high-level orchestral music that is not afraid to be accessible and entertaining.

The only concert in Lithuania – right in the heart of Christmas

The Kaunas concert will be created as a large-scale Christmas arena show with "The European Pop Orchestra," Wendy Kokkelkoren, vocal soloists, special arrangements, a festive repertoire, and an impressive visual stage production.

December 22nd is the emotional peak of the Christmas period: there will be only two days left until Christmas Eve. "Christmas Show: When the Classics Joke!" is created not just as a concert, but as an evening from which the audience will take away a festive mood, energy, and a smile.
