Staged based on Jurga Ivanauskaitė's "The Witch and the Rain" and Dante Alighieri's "Inferno"

Jurga Ivanauskaitė's "The Witch and the Rain" is undoubtedly one of the most prominent novels in Lithuanian literature. Upon its release, it was banned from distribution in regular bookstores on the grounds that the work contained "erotic content." The forbidden fruit syndrome took effect – the front pages of all daily newspapers were flashing with headlines about how Lithuania now had a banned national literature, the 25,000-copy print run was snatched up in just two weeks, and the novel was soon translated into many European languages. Jurga Ivanauskaitė's "The Witch and the Rain" is a novel about the body and the soul, love and sin. Having become a symbol of new freedom in Lithuania in 1993, today it arrives on the stage of the Alytus City Theatre – no longer as shocking, but no less open, sensitive, and touching the very depths of the soul.

"When creating plays, I am primarily drawn to good literature. That is what happened with Jurga Ivanauskaitė's 'The Witch and the Rain'. It is a complex work that can be conveyed on stage in several layers. She writes very visually; in her texts, not only events are important, but also the atmosphere, dreamlike images, and symbols. That is also my theatrical language."
