Lecture "The Heritage of Wooden Architecture in the Context of Žaliakalnis Development"

We invite you to a lecture by historian Dr. Mindaugas Balkus on September 22 at 6:00 PM in the Events Hall of the Ąžuolynas Library (K. Donelaičio St. 8, 3rd floor), which will provide a panoramic view of the historical development of Žaliakalnis from the mid-19th century to the present day. The historian will present the wooden military towns of the Kaunas Fortress (which have not survived), reveal the rapid urbanization of this part of the city, the development of wooden architecture during the interwar period, and discuss the partial implementation of the 1923 Kaunas city development plan created by Danish urbanist Marius Peter Frandsen and engineer Antanas Jokimas in Žaliakalnis. We will raise questions: how did Žaliakalnis turn from a suburb into one of the most distinctive parts of Kaunas? Why is it so rich in wooden houses and what dangers do they face today? You will learn what is most difficult about trying to preserve wooden architecture in our days, amidst gentrification processes. This is a lecture for everyone who wants to better understand the history of Žaliakalnis, its architectural uniqueness, and the changes taking place today. The project "Fragile Heritage: Openings of Wooden Žaliakalnis" is funded by the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.
