Exhibition "Resurrected from the Ashes. Kaunas"

The exhibition will be open from April 24, 2026, to October 4, 2026. The exhibition presents a cycle of drawings by Mindaugas Lukošaitis, based on artistic research into the Holocaust in Kaunas. This history is part of the policy of Jewish extermination, carried out throughout Nazi-controlled Europe as a systematic, large-scale crime against humanity. In the context of Kaunas, this tragedy is revealed through brutal pogroms, ghetto isolation, and mass killings, which became a tragic reflection of the genocide of Jews across Europe. The artistic research is based on archival documents, historical texts, and the observation of specific Holocaust sites in Kaunas. In the exhibition, this history is presented in a coherent visual sequence: Prelude to Violence – premonition and the beginning of mass destruction; Rhythm of Death – the pulse of systematic destruction in the forts of Kaunas Fortress; Threshold – the living space of free citizens is reduced to the brink of inevitable death; Censorship of Life – the ruthless sorting of the living and the dead carried out by the Nazi regime; דְּמָמָה – the piercing silence of the end. The drawings are executed in Japanese ink, which forms a restrained monochromatic visual language. The ink, made from soot, takes on a conceptual meaning – a trace of burnt material that remains as a dark layer of history.

The viewer is guided sequentially: by looking at the drawing, the place, and the traces of history, they encounter the history of the Holocaust in Kaunas and its imprint on the city's memory. — Project team Mindaugas Lukošaitis, author of the drawing cycle Resurrected from the Ashes.
