Māris Čačka's solo painting exhibition "Metlaikis"

On September 1st at 4:30 PM, the solo painting exhibition "Metlaikis" by the renowned Latvian artist and head of the Daugavpils Rothko Museum, Māris Čačka, will open at the Kauno kolegija Arts Academy "Čiurlionies" gallery (A. Mackevičiaus g. 27, Kaunas). Curated by the artist himself, the exhibition invites visitors on an experiential journey where the cyclical nature of the environment and time are revealed not through direct imagery, but through a dialogue of color, line, and space. Seasons are one of the oldest benchmarks for perceiving and structuring time, through which humans give meaning to the flow of time. They mark a continuous change in which transformation becomes a natural part of the world order. Each season, distinguished by its unique natural conditions and light characteristics, influences the human being. The natural environment becomes a space not only for perceiving reality but also for self-reflection. In artist Māris Čačka's solo painting exhibition "Metlaikis," the cyclical nature of the environment is the foundation of the concept, yet the works do not convey signs of nature or visible seasons. Color, line, and space create a visual language whose meanings are revealed through a slow process of observation. The painter's compositions are open to the viewer's experience, memories, and associations. This makes every encounter with the creator's painting a special, individual one. Time in the canvases does not mark a sequential order of events. The focus is on change, which is perceived not as the loss of something old, but as a natural part of development where every ending is inseparable from the possibilities provided by a new beginning. The fact that the exhibition is hosted in the "Čiurlionies" gallery, where the spirit of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis is still felt, adds an additional layer of meaning, highlighting that M. Čačka and M. K. Čiurlionis share a similar worldview. Both artists perceive nature as a space for reflection on silence, memory, and continuous, rhythmic change. Therefore, dialogue is very important in M. Čačka's work. It is born between the work and the viewer, between space and color, between what is seen and what is sensed. "Metlaikis" is not an interpretation of the four seasons. In M. Čačka's paintings, time is perceived not as a chronological category, but as an experiential phenomenon that unfolds through the mutual influence of the human being and their surrounding environment. About the artist Māris Čačka (born 1976 in Varakļāni, Latvia) is a Latvian painter, graphic artist, curator, and creator of cultural projects. M. Čačka holds a Master's degree in Art and a Doctorate in Educational Sciences. Since 2020, he has been the director of the Daugavpils Rothko Museum. The painter's creative biography includes over a hundred solo and group exhibitions in Latvia and abroad. His works are held in museum, state institution, and private art collections in Europe, Asia, and the United States. M. Čačka initiates international exhibition projects and consistently develops professional cooperation within the Baltic states and the European art space.
