Two churches - one history.

The Surdegis Icon of the Mother of God is the main one here, but not the only one to grant graces to those who ask for them. We will learn how to read icons, the abundance of which often surprises casual visitors to churches. Church Slavonic is not only unused anywhere except in church, but it was never a spoken language either. We will hear how it sounds and what makes it special.

Traditionally, the abundance of religious communities is revealed by the number of houses of prayer. But this did not apply to Kaunas. In the Kaunas occupied by the empire, Catholic churches were turned into the first Orthodox churches. Once Kaunas became the center of the Governorate, having churches only in Catholic churches was not respectable. When the city became a fortress, life changed fundamentally. However, the large number of churches by no means indicated that there was a large permanent Orthodox population here, or that their community was strong or influential.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the Cathedral of the Annunciation to the Most Holy Mother of God open their doors.

Tour price per participant: 15 Eur / 1 participant 12 Eur / 1 participant (for seniors, students, people with disabilities)

The ticket price includes a donation/support for the preservation of church heritage.

Meeting place and start of the tour: At the Karmelitai (Old Kaunas) cemetery, behind the "Griunvaldo gatvė" bus stop, on Vytautas Avenue.

The tour will take place both outdoors and indoors - please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather and, if necessary, have protection from the rain.
